🍄 Trip like a movie

Hi Reader,

🍄 Trip Like a Movie

I often enjoy psychedelics with others like I enjoy films...

I like to be with someone I trust, but with our attention on the experience of the film, not talking all the way through it.

How I like to partake in group psychedelic experiences is on my mind because a new friend asked if I'd like to trip with them. I told them yes, but I'd like to sit down and talk about how we like to trip first.

That's because different people have different ideas about how to share psychedelics. Some people like it like a tea party; chatty, social, enjoying the conversation. But for me, I often enjoy tripping with others like I enjoy going to the cinema.

When I see a film with someone, the fun part is choosing it together — picking the day, the cinema, the snacks. But when the lights go down, we watch the film.

Maybe there’s the odd whisper at quiet parts, but mostly we’re in it. Fully immersed. Afterwards is when we talk. We debrief. We share our favourite parts, what it meant, what we felt.

That tends to be how I like psychedelics too.

We choose the day, the dose, the setting, the soundtrack, but when the trip starts, we’re in it. Together, but inward. Later, we sit down and unpack it all. That debrief conversation after is gold, one of the simplest, strongest forms of integration I know. And for me, possibly the most important part of connective tissue for a group session.

So if you’re planning a journey with someone, talk about this beforehand. Do you want a tea party or cinema experience? Inward dive or deep conversation? Or maybe a bit of both?

Try to align expectations beforehand for a smooth group flow. It can make for a smoother more uccessful experience, and will avoid an awkward situation where someone is trying to close their eyes and focus on an emerging insight, whilst the other is excitedly trying to talk to them about the beauty of the clouds!

How do you like to trip? Tea party, cinema or something else?
Hit reply and let me know, always lovely to hear from you.

Hi Reader, 🍄 Laws of Living: What We Can Learn from Ozzy Last week, the world lost a behemoth. Ozzy Osbourne passed away a couple of weeks after playing a charity show, the same one that prompted me to share a live Black Sabbath video in the last newsletter. I feel connected to both Ozzy and Sabbath. Even though I didn’t grow up listening to them and discovered their music later (they’re a generation before me), they were part of the landscape I grew up in. They’re from Birmingham, a...

Hi Reader, 🍄 Just being with people can be the medicine Sorry I didn’t get the newsletter out to you last week. I had a pretty full week of family and friends mixed with travel. Today’s newsletter is a bit more personal memoir but I’ll leave you with something to think about :) First up, I went on a short cruise with my mum to Amsterdam. She’s responded well to her initial treatment and was given an all clear. She’d like to travel while she’s well enough, so we thought we’d go on a short...

Hi Reader, 🍄 Raves, Ceremonies & Psychedelic Healing Can a rave heal your childhood trauma? Might seem like a strange question, but science is starting to say... yes. A recently published 2025 study tracked 85 people with rough childhoods. They took psychedelics in two settings: traditional ceremonies and modern raves. No therapist’s couch or clipboard. Both groups showed significant drops in trauma symptoms and shame, as well as stronger feelings of connection. The improvements lasted...
